Contemporary View of Haiku = Vista Contemporanea de Haiku

Haiku in Spanish--A Rarity!
Moore's poetry is striking in a number of ways and well worth reading. The fact that they have been translated into Spanish by the well-known translator and poet, Alicia Zavala Galvan, is also worth noting for the value it adds to Moore's book, but also for the access it now allows Spanish readers to Haiku. A nice job by poet and translator!

The poet as an artist employs vibrant images.
In this cluttered world where many busy themselves with the radio, television or CD players, enters the haiku. It is not a new type of poetry but one that has been rediscovered. The unique dimension in this presentation by the haiku specialist Michael Moore is that he presents them to us in two languages, English as well as Spanish. He is not a novice to writing haiku His three other collections: Chocolate Haiku, Chocolate Chips and Home Grown in the Haiku Garden attest to this. Alicia Galvan is right in her introduction when she states "translation of a literary work into another language can best be described as opening Pandora's box." However, she has carefully and skillfully translated these poems as if she had the secret to the lock. The task of the poet as an artist is to employed strong vibrant images in as few words as possible. Similar to his other collections, Michael's poems are like (candy kisses), too many of them will only leaves you feeling stuffed. A few at a time will lighten your day and be the inspiration that is often needed for the mind and soul after a full day's work. Contemporary View of Haiku is enriched by the subtle use of the oriental brush of Don Albert, a San Antonio artist. I would suggest having a copy of this near the dinner table and reading a few before meals to whet the appetite or before retiring in the evening. Contemporary View of Haiku would be a wonderful book to teach contemporary haiku to children, especially since it is a bilingual edition. (Trinida Sanchez)

Contemporary View of Haiku captures the joy of haiku
Contemporary View of Haiku is a work that explore the free-verse style of an old Japanese art form in a bilingual format. ISBN: 0-9610702-6-9

Michael Moore's poetic microcosm is inhabited by the subjects usually associated with haiku: cicadas, fish, dragonflies, crickets, plum blossoms, gardens, and the seasons. But Moore juxtaposes themes with images as diverse as bungi jumpers, cotton candy, and a Navajo blanket. Haiku is an intuitive experience, and at times Moore's deft touch results in a surreal leap. Residing in the here and now details, he mines the evocative power of the common place object: a lounge chair, a wheelbarrow, a collar button, an habachi, a clock, a bullet, bike, and museum bench. Moore's perception lies beyond the threshold of utility. As poetic images, he redeems them. to read Moore's poetry is to dwell in the house of possibility:

Gently waking
the sleeping butterfly
a distant temple bell.

La campana lejana de un templo
suavemente despierta
una mariposa que duerme.

------------------------

Spider leaps
from the ceiling fan
ancient bungi jumper.

Arana brinca
del abanico del techo
saltador bungi antiguo.

Country Roads of New Mexico: Drives, Day Trips, and Weekend Excursions (Country Roads of)

Very Nice
This is a nice book. It is well written.
The chapters are devided into areas of New Mexico. In each chapter there is a little bit about the history of that area, places to visit and more information about other nearby areas.

Having been to many of the areas that are discussed in this book, I found the description on target and the suggestions of places to visit good. I particularly liked the history of the area with directions to see some of the historical spots in each area.

Very nice. Well worth the money. This book will join me in the car as we go on our trips. It will join the RoadSide History of New Mexico as one of our invaluable, must keep in the car resources.

Enjoy.

Heading to New Mexico? Buy this Book!
My family and I planned a trip last summer (2000) using this book. Our original plan was to spend most of our time in Santa Fe and Taos. After we read this book, however, we found several far more interesting trips that cost us about half what it would have cost in Santa Fe. Sure, we did a night in Santa Fe and Taos, but this book showed us the hidden spots in town that really were known only to locals. This book is so good that we even had a wonderful time in Farmington! Yes, that's right, Farmington. In fact, we plan to return their and once again enjoy the hidden restaurants and trading posts in which we found some of the most unique indian jewelry ever (and at about 1/3 of Santa Fe prices). Kudos to Ms. Moore! I just wish I could talk her into writing a similar book about Wisconsin.

Great Guide for Getting Off the Beaten Track
This small but fact-filled book explores the richness of New Mexico beyond the Albuequerque-Santa Fe-Taos axis. The author really knows her stuff--giving equal weight to the Native American, Hispanic and Anglo influences that make New Mexico such an interesting state. It's in the car beside me every time I head there.

Summary and Review
This book takes you through the life of a young teenage girl that is faced with taking care of her mother that is suffering in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease. At the same time, Sylvie is dealing with fitting in at school and being a good friend while still maintaining good grades. Daughter provides a good introduction to the characteristics of Alzheimer's disease and how it affects a family.
Sylvie does not understand what is happening to her mother. Sylvie's mother can no longer perform her normal daily activities such as: working, cooking, and cleaning. As her world changes, Sylvie must learn to cope with the responsibility of taking care of her mother as her health deteriorates. Since Sylvie's parents are divorced and her father is no longer in the home, she must step into the parental role. In addition to Sylvie's worries at home, she is struggling at school with grades and friendships. Her grades are dwindling; she is on the verge of losing a lifelong friendship, and she has lost interest in her piano which provided an escape from reality.
We feel that Daughter would be very useful helping teenagers cope with the different struggles in teenage life and parent illnesses. The book is told from Sylvie's point of view which allows the reader to empathize with her feelings as well as her actions. This book is a heart-wrenching and inspiring story about the life of a brave teenage girl. It would be interesting for students in the 5th to 8th grade levels. Parents and teachers could use this book to promote the study of Alzheimer's disease and how it affects the mind, body, and family.

Deadly Medicine: Why Tens of Thousands of Heart Patients Died in America'a Worst Drug Disaster
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (March, 1995)
Author: Thomas J. Moore
Average review score:

A must read on drug effectiveness and commercialization
This is an excellent account of the effects of allowing marketing of Tamnbocor (flecainide) as an anti-arrhythmic based on "surrogate" intermediate endpoints. Later there was recognition that in fact the drug was associated with increased cardiac death rates when a "gold standard" randomized controlled trial was undertaken. It also shows the problematic relationships between the payment and support of academic researchers into drug effectiveness and the drug firms, many of whose products have been life saving and life transforming. A very well balanced book and very enjoyable reading. The author erroneously describes RA Fisher as an American Genius which would irritate the very English (& later Australian) Cambridge professor of Genetics!

Unbelievable but TRUE story how prescription drugs kill!
This important investigative work explains HOW and WHY the American Pharmaceutical Industry KILLS and no one seems seriously interested in stopping it, least of all the FDA! Legally prescribed drugs are now the 4th LEADING cause of death in the US. We are trying to change this by helping to train physicians and the public to use natural approaches instead of drugs, inspite of the continous FDA and FTC harrassment of all doctors in Alternative Medicine. Our system that financially rewards doctors millions of dollars for KILLING people is seriously out of control. If natural therapies are even alleged to have slightly harmed even 1 patient, the FDA stands ready to seize ALL of the supplies and put everyone involved in jail. Yet drugs are provably killing over 100,000 each year and the GAME goes on. I believe this book could help everyone understand that this must all change and soon. This book merely describes the tip of the iceberg and the 70,000 dead from these heart medicines described in detail here, is just a fraction of the real number needlessly killed by American medicine and surgery everyday at great taxpayor expense. WE have safe and EFFECTIVE alternatives to virtually every drug, including aspirin (not tylenol!) and most heart surgery is done on the WRONG plaque and does not significantly reduce the likelihood of a heart attack. There are SAFE natural alternatives not just for heart disease but for virtually every one of the major diseases today! contact G.F. Gordon M.D.D.O. Important piece of the jigsaw showing unscientific medicine
Ralph Moss wrote an excellent review of this book in the Spring 1997 edition of the Cancer Chronicles. I am writing only to put his review into context. There have been many books written describing the shortcomings of medicine, particularly those questioning claims of the efficacy of medical intervention. These include Robert Mendelsohn's Confessions of A Medical Heretic; Richard Taylor's Medicine out of Control; Ivan Illich's Medical Nemesis; the New Medical Foundation's Dissent in Medicine; Samuel Epstein's The Politics of Cancer; Ralph Moss' Cancer Industry and Questioning Chemotherapy; Ulrich Abel's Chemotherapy of advanced epithelial cancer - a critical survey; What Doctors Don't Tell You's Cancer Handbook, What's Really Working; and Neville Hodgkinson's AIDS, the failure of scientific medicine. (I have also published two papers questioning the efficacy of surgical treatment of cancer in Medical Hypotheses.) These together support and explain the claim in the editorial in the British Medical Journal of October 1991 (Vol 303: 198-99) "Where is the wisdom...? The poverty of medical evidence" that "Only about 15% of medical interventions are supported by solid evidence... This is partly because only 1% of the articles in medical journals are scientifically sound". Thomas Moore's earlier (1989) book Heart Failure describes the poor record of treating heart problems with bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty and drugs to lower serum cholesterol. Moore's more recent book homes in on particular drugs such as those used to treat arrhythmia. With deaths from heart disease accounting for more than 40% of all deaths these two books on the inefficacy of treatments for heart problems fill an important gap. As a scientist I found the section explaining how "surrogate endpoints" are used instead of actual therapeutic benefits to test efficacy particularly useful. It explains why so many claims for the efficacy of chemotherapy are invalid. It is a pity that the book is now out of print.

The Doctor's Wife
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (December, 1995)
Authors: Brian Moore and Frances Tomelty
Average review score:

Moore is the Picasso of the modern romance novel!
Wow! What a book! I don't usually read romance novels, and I'm still unsure as to what compelled me to buy this one. But whatever the reason, I'm glad I did!

Had someone handed me this book to read, stripped of its cover thus leaving me no clue as to whom had written it, never in a million years would I have guessed the author to be a man!
Brian Moore should be commended for his impressive ability at bringing to life the totally believable female character portrayed in this book. Few male writers can successfully execute on paper such a vivid and candid depiction of a middle-aged woman in turmoil--the revealing of her innermost thoughts about herself and the world around her as she grapples with the sensitive issues of aging and sexuality.

Anticipating her husband's arrival in France to celebrate their second honeymoon, Sheila Redden dreams of rekindling the passions and excitement once present in their stale, sixteen-year marriage. However, disillusioned by his many excuses for not showing up to meet her, Sheila soon becomes painfully aware that her husband's busy schedule with tending patients takes precedence over her happiness. Lonely and deeply hurt, Sheila does what I guess many emotionally-neglected wives would do--she has an affair. I don't think that she intentionally went out looking to get laid--it was just something that happened quite naturally given the vulnerable state of mind she was in at the time. What starts out as a seemingly innocent enough chat with a handsome young American in a Paris diner, suddenly magnifies into something far more serious. Riddled with guilt, yet driven by the desire to walk away from her loveless marriage in favor of a more independent life, Sheila confesses to her husband (over the phone!) that she is in love with another man. What follows Sheila's confession is an unexpected train of events that will drastically change the lives of all of those she touches.

As I've said before--Wow! What a book! This is one of those
'once upon a time' fairy tale romances, but one in which no one at the end rides off into the sunset happily ever after.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to just kick back and enjoy a good ole' fashioned, brilliantly-written romance novel. But be forewarned--some of the lovemaking scenes are quite explicit.

TWO THUMBS UP FOR THIS THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE NOVEL!

Heartfelt reading
Wonderfully romantic reading, but not sappy or "unreal"......I loved this book from page one until the end.........a woman's awakening to her life. Highly recommend it.

A disturbingly real tale of a woman's awakening.
Smart, quiet, shy, too tall, Sheila had never been on her own. She went from dependence on her parents to dependence on a husband. After 15 years of marriage, a long-planned 2nd honeymoon sets into motion the chain of events which leads her away from her safe, ordered, boring existence, and awakens a desire for autonomy.

Moore's cool, precise, detached prose steers the reader through an emotional storm. If anything, this coolness enhances the intensely erotic scenes in the story. As always with Brian Moore, the tale seems to be driven by its own internal workings, and the personalities of its characters. Yet the ending is neither staid nor predictable. You will not be able to put this book down easily, or to put it out of your mind until long after you have finished reading it.

First Night and Beyond: A Guide to Intimacy and Sexual Fulfillment for Newlyweds

Pre-marital must have!
This book provides fabulous insight into the world of marital intimacy. As I was preparing for my marriage, I found the book to be a wonderful tool for helping to ease the transition into married life and all of the enjoyment that intimacy has to offer. We found within its pages a beautiful guide for husband and wife--it addresses issues such as love, communication, self-image and provides some of those tough answers to questions that are sometimes too difficult to ask. The book was recommended to me by my doctor, and as newlyweds, we couldn't be more grateful for the sensitive advice and information offered by this husband/wife team. "First Night..." also served a wonderful purpose in opening up for comfortable conversation the topic of sexual intimacy with my parents and other trusted loved ones. I would recommend it to parents with soon-to-be-married children! It works wonders! Not only did the book provide us with preparation and insight before marriage, it continues to be a valuable tool even now...even after...the "First Night."

newlyweds must
This is a must for all newlyweds and not so newly weds. A book that covers a very sensitive subject in a very tasteful way. A healthy, happy marriage must also include a wonderful sexual relationship and "First Night and Beyond" covers subjects that are rarely talked about but SO very important.

First Night and Beyond
This is a book that discusses past present and future problems that may affect your intimate relationship. It was written for newlyweds but is helpful to anyone seeking to have fullfillment in their relationship. The unique quality of this book lays in the fact that it is written by a husband and wife team. The format of the book dicusses problems and solutions from both sides. They each have their turn and helping you understand what is going on and how to improve it. It really is a book full of solutions. The format actually teaches you how to communicate. There are several extras in the back of the book that you must be sure not to miss. Each appendix addresses in FULL detail ways to enrich your intimate relationship. You will be able to take your relationship to a whole new level and find out what you are missing.

Before reading Foundations of Corporate Empire I was not aware of the other book Birth of the Multinational: 2000 Years of Ancient Business History--From Ashur to Augustus, now I still think do I have to buy that one too? For me it is a fascinating book which is the outcome of a detailed investigation and work.

By the way, I would be pleased if they put more stress on the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire and also South East Asia, Inkas, Azteks etc.

But I can recommend this book as a guideline of historical evolution of the modern business organizations and cultures.

Globe and Mail Book Review
From the Report on Business, Globe and Mail Newspaper, Canada's National Newspaper
By BRIAN MILNER
Friday, December 28, 2001 - Print Edition, Page 91FOUNDATIONS OF CORPORATE EMPIRE: Is History Repeating Itself? by Karl Moore and David Lewis (Financial Times/Prentice Hall, $...) Foundations of Corporate Empire is a dreary title for a business book that turns out to be anything but. It is in fact a sweeping, yet remarkably readable, history of globalization that marshals impressive evidence to prove something we should have learned by now: There is simply nothing new under the sun, and anyone who thinks business just discovered the joys of free trade and global markets yesterday has a lot to learn.Doing the teaching here are two Canadian academics: Karl Moore, a professor of strategic management at McGill University, and David Lewis, a historian with a wide range of interests, including ancient Mesopotamia. That, in fact, is where the authors start, tracing the development of business cultures from the Bronze Age and the "first recorded multinational"--a family trading business in Assyria nearly 4,000 years ago--up to the internet age and America's globe-spanning technology giants.Unfortunately, this book was finished before the tech bubble burst, making some of its conclusions as obsolete as those Assyrian traders. But this does nothing to detract from its main points--that today's economic and corporate structures are the product of generations of evolution and that each nation favours the model best suited to its own culture, institutions and history."Many of today's economic structures existed in prototype form several thousand years ago," the authors note early on, and then set out to prove it. They make connections between the business leaders of Mesopotamia and modern German corporations, between classical Athens and Britain at its height, between ancient and modern China, and between the mighty Roman and even mightier American empires. Some of the links are obvious, such as the mass production and technological developments stemming from the military requirements of both ancient Rome and the United States. Others seem more of a stretch. What is particularly refreshing is that this is no apologia for the current wave of globalization or its apparent American character. The authors make a convincing case that merely because the American model has been overwhelmingly dominant, it does not mean every country will inevitably have to fall into line. Any attempt to impose the American way "in its entirety...is bound not only to fail but also to generate a very unpleasant backlash."

History class shed in a whole new light
A novel and intriguing look at the history of modern civilization and the corporate underpinnings that have pervaded throughout. Somewhat general but nonetheless both accurate and interesting. Original and entertaining. Great Book

From the Heart of a Gentle Brother
Published in Paperback by Hay House (March, 1998)
Authors: Bartholomew and Mary-Margaret Moore
Average review score:

Simple and accessible
Whatever your convictions and beliefs about god and the universe, here is a book that can let you have thoughts on wavelength you may not have dared to access before.

Keep in mind that such concepts as god, good and evil, etc. have been layered with thousands of personal values. Those values often stand in the way of more erudite percption of the nature of reality and truth that could be had, were we not bogged down by our, sometimes insistingly, dogmatic views of how things must or should be.

In someone else's reality they are rarely exactly as any of us personally perceives. Bartholomew's eye-openers lead you to realise that compassion is a foremost 'must' in understanding. After all compassion makes us care. When you care you create reality.

Again I recommend this book in addition to anything you might have read so far. A real treasure.

An amazing, mind-blowing, life-changing, proufound truth
I love Bartholomew Books, I have been reading and following them for years, I have spoken in inspirational sermons about Bartholomew, I am continually working with "His" energy field and vibration. Bartholomew books will blow your mind, change your rate of vibration, change your paradigm if you deeply think about this material. Bartholomew books that I pass on to friends and recommend highly, people that read the books later come to me, thank me, I've even had friends kiss the book. This is my favorite of the Bartholomew series, level 33 is amazing, so is the exercise on expansion. Bartholomew books if it's the first time you come into this field of truth, knowledge and channeled insight, it might take some time to digest. It is virtually not possible to read a whole Bartholomew book from cover to cover, and sometimes when you open the book, you will be guided to the exact page that will illuminate you, make you laugh, and be gently guided and loved for the amazing Beings that we are on Your Path. I love Bartholomew, his teachings and clarity, wisdom, and truths have transformed my life and energy, and I have yet to read anything even close to the deep love, and wisdom. I've had friends with near-death experiences traveling through the tunnel of light, after a friend of mine was electrocuted, she died briefly, and saw Bartholomew, apparently he is pictured as an old male with a white beard, with a heart aglowing of love, wisdom, as a brother that he is. My friend is back and still on this side of the veil, and trust that these books definitely have a unique power, beauty, clarity, truth and wisdom in it. I don't think they are for everyone, yet the true spiritual finder as opposed to seeker, will delight in these teachings. Planetary Brother, is more of an introduction to the series and is quite proufound, it contains a lot of psychology of the mind, thinking and being responsible for what you choose to create, mentally, and in your own reality. Reflections of An Elder Brother, is more philosophical, very refletive, and has a lot of deep insights, a great book to read on a rainy day. All the Bartholomew books are proufound and there is so much material to be digested. I highly recommend this series and as Bartholomew would say, "it is worth it." It is not light reading, the exercises are great, and the energy you pick up if you are sensitive while reading the books is expansive and transformational. Thank you, take my word, you'll love it! I do.

Reflections of an Elder Brother
In fifteen years or more of reading various books that reflect our true nature I've never read any that give more helpful sugestions that clearly work in one's day to day living. All of the Bartholomew books are simply outstanding.

Our bedtime ritual almost always include Princess Pruney Toes! My daughter and I have read it thousands of times!! The pictures are so fun! I'm happy that a story for DADDIES and little girls, a rather unusual combination in picturebooks, came into our life! I recommend it for every kingdom!!

So Sweet
This is such a special story. My girls love for their Daddy to read it to them. The pictures are so beautiful, and the story about a Daddy getting his little girl ready for bed by pretending she is a princess is sweet and lovely. This is one of our favorites.

My daugter's favorite book!
This is by far my daughters favorite book. She and my husband read it together almost every night. The dance at the end of the story is acted at every single evening just before she gets in bed. I recommend this book for fathers and daughters everywhere! It is heart warming, and pullsat my "heartstrings everytime I hear it read.
