Haiku in Spanish--A Rarity!
The poet as an artist employs vibrant images.
Contemporary View of Haiku captures the joy of haikuMustard Seed Press
Michael Moore's poetic microcosm is inhabited by the subjects usually associated with haiku: cicadas, fish, dragonflies, crickets, plum blossoms, gardens, and the seasons. But Moore juxtaposes themes with images as diverse as bungi jumpers, cotton candy, and a Navajo blanket. Haiku is an intuitive experience, and at times Moore's deft touch results in a surreal leap. Residing in the here and now details, he mines the evocative power of the common place object: a lounge chair, a wheelbarrow, a collar button, an habachi, a clock, a bullet, bike, and museum bench. Moore's perception lies beyond the threshold of utility. As poetic images, he redeems them. to read Moore's poetry is to dwell in the house of possibility:
Gently waking
the sleeping butterfly
a distant temple bell.
La campana lejana de un templo
suavemente despierta
una mariposa que duerme.

Spider leaps
from the ceiling fan
ancient bungi jumper.
Arana brinca
del abanico del techo
saltador bungi antiguo.

Very NiceThe chapters are devided into areas of New Mexico. In each chapter there is a little bit about the history of that area, places to visit and more information about other nearby areas.
Having been to many of the areas that are discussed in this book, I found the description on target and the suggestions of places to visit good. I particularly liked the history of the area with directions to see some of the historical spots in each area.
Very nice. Well worth the money. This book will join me in the car as we go on our trips. It will join the RoadSide History of New Mexico as one of our invaluable, must keep in the car resources.
Enjoy.

In addition to Sylvie's worries at home, she is struggling at school with grades and friendships. Her grades are dwindling; she is on the verge of losing a lifelong friendship, and she has lost interest in her piano which provided an escape from reality.
We feel that Daughter would be very useful helping teenagers cope with the different struggles in teenage life and parent illnesses. The book is told from Sylvie's point of view which allows the reader to empathize with her feelings as well as her actions. This book is a heart-wrenching and inspiring story about the life of a brave teenage girl. It would be interesting for students in the 5th to 8th grade levels. Parents and teachers could use this book to promote the study of Alzheimer's disease and how it affects the mind, body, and family.
DaughterSylvie is starting to change as well, she starts to wear tihgt clothes and hang with the "in" group at school. Can her popularity make up for the loss of her relationship with her mother? What is wrong with Sylvie's mother? What can Sylvie do?

ME, ME AND MORE ME!

Moore is the Picasso of the modern romance novel!Had someone handed me this book to read, stripped of its cover thus leaving me no clue as to whom had written it, never in a million years would I have guessed the author to be a man!
Brian Moore should be commended for his impressive ability at bringing to life the totally believable female character portrayed in this book. Few male writers can successfully execute on paper such a vivid and candid depiction of a middle-aged woman in turmoil--the revealing of her innermost thoughts about herself and the world around her as she grapples with the sensitive issues of aging and sexuality.
Anticipating her husband's arrival in France to celebrate their second honeymoon, Sheila Redden dreams of rekindling the passions and excitement once present in their stale, sixteen-year marriage. However, disillusioned by his many excuses for not showing up to meet her, Sheila soon becomes painfully aware that her husband's busy schedule with tending patients takes precedence over her happiness. Lonely and deeply hurt, Sheila does what I guess many emotionally-neglected wives would do--she has an affair. I don't think that she intentionally went out looking to get laid--it was just something that happened quite naturally given the vulnerable state of mind she was in at the time. What starts out as a seemingly innocent enough chat with a handsome young American in a Paris diner, suddenly magnifies into something far more serious. Riddled with guilt, yet driven by the desire to walk away from her loveless marriage in favor of a more independent life, Sheila confesses to her husband (over the phone!) that she is in love with another man. What follows Sheila's confession is an unexpected train of events that will drastically change the lives of all of those she touches.
As I've said before--Wow! What a book! This is one of those
'once upon a time' fairy tale romances, but one in which no one at the end rides off into the sunset happily ever after.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to just kick back and enjoy a good ole' fashioned, brilliantly-written romance novel. But be forewarned--some of the lovemaking scenes are quite explicit.
TWO THUMBS UP FOR THIS THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE NOVEL!
Heartfelt reading
A disturbingly real tale of a woman's awakening.Moore's cool, precise, detached prose steers the reader through an emotional storm. If anything, this coolness enhances the intensely erotic scenes in the story. As always with Brian Moore, the tale seems to be driven by its own internal workings, and the personalities of its characters. Yet the ending is neither staid nor predictable. You will not be able to put this book down easily, or to put it out of your mind until long after you have finished reading it.

commentsBy the way, I would be pleased if they put more stress on the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire and also South East Asia, Inkas, Azteks etc.
But I can recommend this book as a guideline of historical evolution of the modern business organizations and cultures.
Globe and Mail Book ReviewBy BRIAN MILNER
Friday, December 28, 2001 - Print Edition, Page 91FOUNDATIONS OF CORPORATE EMPIRE: Is History Repeating Itself? by Karl Moore and David Lewis (Financial Times/Prentice Hall, $...) Foundations of Corporate Empire is a dreary title for a business book that turns out to be anything but. It is in fact a sweeping, yet remarkably readable, history of globalization that marshals impressive evidence to prove something we should have learned by now: There is simply nothing new under the sun, and anyone who thinks business just discovered the joys of free trade and global markets yesterday has a lot to learn.Doing the teaching here are two Canadian academics: Karl Moore, a professor of strategic management at McGill University, and David Lewis, a historian with a wide range of interests, including ancient Mesopotamia. That, in fact, is where the authors start, tracing the development of business cultures from the Bronze Age and the "first recorded multinational"--a family trading business in Assyria nearly 4,000 years ago--up to the internet age and America's globe-spanning technology giants.Unfortunately, this book was finished before the tech bubble burst, making some of its conclusions as obsolete as those Assyrian traders. But this does nothing to detract from its main points--that today's economic and corporate structures are the product of generations of evolution and that each nation favours the model best suited to its own culture, institutions and history."Many of today's economic structures existed in prototype form several thousand years ago," the authors note early on, and then set out to prove it. They make connections between the business leaders of Mesopotamia and modern German corporations, between classical Athens and Britain at its height, between ancient and modern China, and between the mighty Roman and even mightier American empires. Some of the links are obvious, such as the mass production and technological developments stemming from the military requirements of both ancient Rome and the United States. Others seem more of a stretch. What is particularly refreshing is that this is no apologia for the current wave of globalization or its apparent American character. The authors make a convincing case that merely because the American model has been overwhelmingly dominant, it does not mean every country will inevitably have to fall into line. Any attempt to impose the American way "in its entirety...is bound not only to fail but also to generate a very unpleasant backlash."
History class shed in a whole new light

Simple and accessibleKeep in mind that such concepts as god, good and evil, etc. have been layered with thousands of personal values. Those values often stand in the way of more erudite percption of the nature of reality and truth that could be had, were we not bogged down by our, sometimes insistingly, dogmatic views of how things must or should be.
In someone else's reality they are rarely exactly as any of us personally perceives. Bartholomew's eye-openers lead you to realise that compassion is a foremost 'must' in understanding. After all compassion makes us care. When you care you create reality.
Again I recommend this book in addition to anything you might have read so far. A real treasure.
An amazing, mind-blowing, life-changing, proufound truth
